Dear Members, |
At 7:00pm Friday, March 13th, the Metal Arts Society of So Cal. held an emergency (online) meeting to discuss the current outbreak of Covid-19 and how best to handle our upcoming events to protect our members and the community. |
IDENTIFYING UNMARKED SOLDER
There are plenty of ways to mark your sheet or wire solders, but suppose you forgot to mark them and have a couple that you can't identify. The answer is to compare the melting temperature of the unknowns with that of a known solder. What I do is take a thick scrap of copper or nickel and arrange several solders on it. Ideally, I would have a sample of easy, medium and hard known solders surrounding the unknown solder. Then I heat the plate from the bottom and watch the order in which the solders melt.
A: Direct casting is a process that does not require procedures and equipment that we generally associate with casting and is an easy way to make organic components you can use in your work.
The most common request we’ve had from members is “more time”. So, the Metal Challenge 2020 kits are now for sale until December 15th, which will let us get the kits out mid January.
It's time once again to open up the floor to nominations! If you know someone who you think would be a good addition to the MASSC Board, tell them to throw their name in the hat for nominated officials.
Please step forward to run and volunteer as a board member helping us continue to establish the direction, policies, and strategic planning of the organization in order to serve the needs of MASSC members. Interested persons can contact the Elections Committee with any questions and self-nominations at MetalArts@gmail.com
MASSC recently held a Downtown LA Jewelry District Tour to which I had partaken in. The tour started in an alleyway with cozy little food shops that lined the walls. We all met at a small coffee shop named La Café Bonjour (and boy, did we need the coffee). After everyone had arrived we were broken into different groups and each group had a diverse mixture of students that have never been to the district, veterans in the field, and hobbyists trying to broaden their horizon.
, , , ,The air was crisp and colorful leaves dotted the landscape. Chairs were arranged and the extended dining room table had been expanded to its greatest length. Everything was ready in Marne’s space for the Ornament Activity. Tools had been collected and were stationed just outside the studio. We were ready.
