President's Message August 2020

presdientGreetings fellow Metalsmiths,

While continuing to navigate these strange waters, MASSC has some pretty special programming lined up for you. Hopefully this helps to keep things interesting.

We have a new video available in the Members Only Online Video Library, It’s the Show & Tell that Erin Proctor hosted for us on June 27th, and it’s complete with theme music and credits for the participants. Someone in the video editing department is getting fancy ;) https://vimeo.com/showcase/massc

We have an upcoming Hammer Texture Workshop with Andrea Harvin-Kennington of NC Black. Registration deadline September 12th. REGISTER HERE: https://massconline.com/event/hammer-texture-workshop

Andrea teaches workshops all over the country, well… pre-covid. Anyway, she’s continued to teach in her studio on an extremely limited basis and has written an article for us on Covid Studio Practices that I think everybody should read, esp if you share a space with anybody else.  https://massconline.com/article/covid-19-studio-practices-andrea-kennington

Betty Helen Longhi has agreed to have an exclusive interview for MASSC, hosted by Andrea, and we’re looking forward to that in October. I’m extremely excited about that because it’s an honor to know her as one of the leading metalsmiths of our time. Her work is mind-blowing and she LITERALLY wrote the book on Creative Metal Forming. This is a DO-NOT-MISS type of event, and it’s only available for MASSC members.

I know that people are wondering what’s happening with this year’s Metals Challenge, so here’s the update. We just finished photography and videography and we’re in the process of getting the pieces returned to the rightful owners. All of the entries were viewed by this years judges and the judges have selected the Grand Prize Winner, the 1st Place Winner, AND the 2nd place winner. Those winners will be announced on August 15th with the release of the video slideshow of this years entries. The slideshow will have all the anonymous entries and you choose your single favorite entry for the award on honorable mention. Voting will remain open for a full week to accommodate voters schedules. One vote per MASSC Member.

We’re also spotlighting MASSC Member Kay Yee, who used to run the metalsmithing program at Pasadena City College. She’s doing some lovely nesting bowls and has been working on many wearable enamel pieces for local galleries. Check out her work below.

We’re still working on making Demo Day an online event and are still looking for presenters that can demonstrate or give a presentation 35-40 minutes long on a metalsmithing related topic. The talk can be pre-recorded and streamed with live Q+A session afterwards, or you can play a live powerpoint and talk over it, or the demo can be done live and streamed to our audience. Would anybody like to be one of our 5 presenters online this year?

Email demonstration Ideas to our Vice President or Programming, Ketarah Shaffer <ketarah.massc@gmail.com>

Stay safe and be smart,

~Angelina
