MASSC Demo Day 2025

Registration / Check-in opens 9 am
Demos run 10 am thru 2 pm

Demo Day is the Metal Arts Society of Southern California’s most popular annual event.
Four artists will each present a 1 hour “how to” demonstration on topics of interest to metal artisans.
The event also features an auction for tools, books, gems and items related to metalsmithing and jewelry fabrication.
Proceeds from the auction help support MASSC programs. MASSC is a California 501c3 nonprofit organization.

2025 Demo Day Presenters

Paul Nielson
Flush Setting & Beyond

Paul Nielsen is a jewelry designer and manufacturer from Lower Providence, PA. He has been a designer for 30 years during which time he has become a master diamond setter and known in the jewelry industry as Pavé Paul. He has recently taught at Tyler School of Art and various universities throughout the state of Pennsylvania as well as GIA in Carlsbad, CA. He is the owner of Paul Nielsen Jewelry Designs LLC.

Mike and Rachelle Stromberg, our favorite casting couple from San Diego will be coming to Demo Day! They will bring examples of the work they do as well as molds they make. Mike will talk about how he uses 3D printing for casting. Not to be missed!

Heather McLarty
Oh Sheet! How Metal Moves

Heather will present and discuss her philosophy on “Uchidashi”, the Japanese technique of hammering or embossing to create raised designs. Though similar to Western chasing and repousse, it is considered a distinct process with its own nuances. Heather will share examples and her philosophy on the different types of “anvils” and tooling and the use of annealing and work-hardening the surface of the metal in the process of achieving high relief chasing.

Tonia Crane
Mix It Up with Enamel Overglaze

Tanya Crane is a nationally recognized jeweler & enamelist, and is an Associate Professor of Art at Long Beach City College. Tanya will demonstrate how you can use Ferro Sunshine Overglaze enamels to enhance your enamel work. She will share examples of her work and will cover the various oils for mixing the overglaze and its application.
